Newmarket Road: Phase 2 - Christchurch Road to Hanover Road

Project details:
- Provision of a segregated one-way cycle lane on the northern side of Newmarket Road (city bound) from east of Christchurch Road to the Hanover Road footpath link
- Provision of a new signalised Toucan crossing on Newmarket Road at the Hanover Road footpath link to provide a route across the carriageway for pedestrians/cyclists
- Installation of raised table crossings (road humps) on Town Close Road, Albemarle Road and Mount Pleasant at their junctions with Newmarket Road
- Conversion of the existing footway on the southern side of Newmarket Road into a shared use footway/cycleway between Hanover Road link and Lime Tree Road
Benefits of scheme:
- Creates a safer and improved inbound cycling facility on the north side of Newmarket Road by providing a dedicated cycle lane between Christchurch Road and the Hanover Road link, enabling access to the blue pedalway route
- Conversion of the existing wide footway on the south side of Newmarket Road, providing an off carriageway shared-use footway/cycleway facility
- This project forms part of ongoing work to improve the quality of cycling infrastructure across Norwich and is an important part of the Transport for Norwich (TfN) strategy

Consultation
A consultation on proposals for the project took place in January 2017. The responses were considered and presented to Norwich Highways Agency Committee on Thursday 16 March 2017.
Background
The first phase of work to improve Newmarket Road heading out of the city between the Daniels Road roundabout and the Unthank Road junction took place between January and April this year.
This project as a whole aims to improve the blue pedalway and represents a significant upgrade to the existing cycling infrastructure on Newmarket Road, making it safer, more coherent and easier to use.
Newmarket Road forms one of the main sections of the blue pedalway, an important route that connects Wymondham, Hethersett and Cringleford to the city centre. It also joins with the orbital purple route in Eaton Village and all other routes in the city centre.
