Fire and Emergency Support Services (FESS)

The fire and emergency support service (FESS) provides practical help and emotional support if you are affected by a domestic fire or similar incident anywhere across Norfolk.

This 24/7 service is delivered by trained British Red Cross volunteers. They use a specially adapted vehicle which is located at Sprowston fire station in Norwich.

The longstanding partnership between Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service and the British Red Cross means the FESS has provided valuable support to hundreds of people in need after incidents across the county.

The service can:

  • Offer immediate temporary shelter in the FESS vehicle
  • Help find temporary accommodation
  • Provide first aid and emotional support
  • Signpost to other organisations
  • Support with the care of children and pets
  • Help find shower and toilet facilities
  • Help with clothing, toiletries and light refreshments
  • Help with use of a telephone and camera to assist with insurance claims

Contacting the service

The service will be contacted by Norfolk's fire control, depending on the circumstance of the incident and at the request of fire crews on the scene.

The service is free to the people receiving it. All costs are met by voluntary donations to the British Red Cross.
