Free exhibition explores the power of gardening
Norwich Millennium Library is proud to present "Unearthed: The Power of Gardening", a free summer exhibition exploring the transformative impact of gardening.
Opening on Wednesday 16 July, the exhibition highlights how gardening brings people together, shapes our relationship with nature, and serves as a form of activism. The work features collaborations with Black Futures (produced by 'innate creates') and artists from Edible East.
Maddy Smith, lead curator of 'Unearthed: The Power of Gardening' at the British Library, said:
"Gardening is a transformative force. It can promote healing and wellbeing, forge closer communities, refresh neglected spaces and drive social change. Gardening connects us to our past, grounds us in the present and encourages us to look ahead to the future so I am really looking forward to seeing how our Living Knowledge Network partners augment the exhibition for audiences across the UK."
Margaret Dewsbury, cabinet member for communities and partnerships at Norfolk County Council said:
"We're excited to bring this powerful exhibition to Norwich and to celebrate its opening with Black Futures. This collaboration with the British Library is an interesting way to explore other cultures and experiences through something as familiar as gardening."
The exhibition will launch with a special evening of food, music and ideas that celebrate African and Caribbean heritage.
The event will feature artist Eden Mullane, who will share her life journey and artistic insights - with an opportunity to see some of her work up close. The food will be provided by the Zainab Project who use cooking to equip refugees and asylum seekers in Norwich with the skills they need to find future employment.
The exhibition will run until 30 August 2025, when it will move to Fakenham Library from 3-27 September 2025.
Tickets for the opening night can be booked via Eventbrite.
