Career pathway
Clinical - newly qualified/intermediate
Clinical newly qualified/intermediate roles are registered health positions like midwifery and nursing.
You will work independently and as part of a team, which will require making clinical decisions. You'll work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals to provide high-quality and safe care. As a newly qualified registrant, you will be offered a period of preceptorship as well as regular supervision to support you in your new role.
As a midwife or nurse you could work in a variety of environments. Many positions require you to rotate between departments across hospital and community settings. For example:
- Neonatal care
- Maternity day assessment units
- Children's wards
- A&E/urgent care
- Delivery suites
- Community clinics
- Community home visiting
What you'll need
You will need a nursing or midwifery undergraduate degree. You can do these courses locally at:
Alternatively, you could achieve this career through progressing from an associate role. You can do this by completing an apprenticeship whilst in employment with your line manager's agreement. This requires coursework, examinations and placements alongside your role. You may complete your placement in block weeks or on a once-a-week basis - depending on the course requirements.
You can also complete an apprenticeship with the NHS. You can use the NHS Jobs site to search for apprenticeships in your area.
