History and background of the Welney Washes
Who owns the Washes
By 2010, the three conservation bodies owned 1,540 hectares (3,800 acres) of the site. Two hundred hectares (490 acres) is held by other organisations:
- The Fenland Wildfowlers Association - 53 hectares (132 acres)
- The Spalding and District Wildfowlers Association - 25 hectares (62 acres)
- Private individuals - the remainder
The wildfowling clubs work closely with the conservation bodies to protect breeding birds.
