Norfolk Electric Vehicle News

Norfolk County Council are supporting the drive to reduce the impact of climate change within Norfolk. Our Electric Vehicle Strategy plays an important role in this. We have introduced several projects across the county to help people move to electric vehicles and help reduce carbon emissions. These projects are ongoing and aim to make Electric Vehicle (EV) charging accessible to everyone. Learn more about our projects below.

Norfolk to see a welcome boost to number of public charge points across the county

Norfolk County Council have bid for and been awarded £6.468m from the government's Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) fund. We will be using this funding to increase Norfolk's public EV charging facilities. The aim of this project is to provide new on-street Electric Vehicle Chargepoints (EVCPs) especially in rural areas where there are few or no chargepoints. We are hoping to go out to tender later this year. Before then, we will be offering Norfolk residents a chance to comment on our proposed locations - a link to the survey will be included here once it is live.

Norwich City on-street Electric Vehicle Chargepoint project

Norwich will be expanding its electric vehicle charging facilities as the final phase of our on-street project will begin soon. This will add six new charging sites across the city, to be installed in partnership between Blink Charging and Norfolk County Council. These new installations will build upon the network of Blink chargers which are already in use, further improving access to EV charging for residents.

More information on the project can be found on our on-street EV project.

Harford Solar Car Port

Harford Park & Ride site is due to be our first site to host a solar car port. Norfolk County Council will be using Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Pilot funding for this project, and the work has been awarded to Volker Highways. The installation will include a solar car port covering 6 parking bays which will power 3 dual socket Electric Vehicle chargers. We are hoping for the installation to start later this year.

Parish Electric Vehicle Charge Point installations

The EV team have been progressing the installation of parish-based chargers after successfully applying for grant funding through the Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) and Norfolk Investment Framework (NIF) funds. These chargers are welcome additions to our community-focused EVCP network, known as 'Plug in Norfolk', and bring the total number of charging stations on the network up to 40.

As part of this, the EV team have been working in collaboration with South Norfolk Council, funded by the UK Government's Rural Prosperity Fund, to fund chargers with solar PV systems at community buildings across South Norfolk. This project increases the provision of charging infrastructure across rural areas, and helps to reduce the energy costs and carbon emissions of community buildings through the installation of solar PV generation.

We have a parish and local member EV charging information page for parishes and Local Members looking for more information about EV charging installations.

The graph above shows a steady increase in the electricity used between the months of September 2022 and December 2024, starting at 97.44 kWh and growing to 1310.94kWh over the next 27 months. After a small drop in usage in February 2025, there was a sharp increase in kWh used between March 2025 and July 2025, as total energy used jumped from 1419.33 kWh to 4594.49 kWh in the space of 5 months and continues to climb.

Graph showing the total CO2 savings (kg) per month from September 2022 to July 2025

The above graph shows the amount of CO2 saved each month as a result of the electricity used over the same time period. As in the previous graph, the CO2 saving per month has increased considerably between September 2022 and July 2025. First recorded as 52.93kg in September 2022, the CO2 saving per month grew to 2471.74kg in July 2025.

August saw 6346.19kWh electricity used - that's enough energy for electric cars to drive about 22,000 miles (based on 3.5 miles per kWh). And by having more electric vehicles on our roads, it's led to a total of 18988.78kg of harmful CO2 not going into the atmosphere since September 2022.

Travel Norfolk: Travel Electric

In partnership with Let's Experience Electric, Norfolk County Council recently held a free event showcasing the benefits of electric vehicles, including cars, buses and bikes. The day offered businesses and individuals insights into the industry and projects happening across Norfolk, along with the chance to test drive vehicles and talk to specialists in the EV industry.
