Electrical waste recycling
Currently you're only able to recycle a limited range of large electrical items at Norfolk recycling centres.
This is because of a significant fire at our electrical waste contractor's premises in Thetford on Thursday 16 April. The fire has had an impact on the treatment capacity for some types of electrical waste collected at Norfolk Recycling Centres.
Electrical items we can and cannot accept
We can accept:
- Washing machines (except at Docking and Heacham)
- Dishwashers (except at Docking and Heacham)
- Cookers (except at Docking and Heacham)
- Tumble dryers (except at Docking and Heacham)
- Laptops (except at Thetford)
- Televisions or monitors (except at Thetford)
We cannot accept:
- Microwaves
- Fridges
- Freezers
- Mobile phones
- Batteries
- Light bulbs
- Any small electrical and battery-powered items (except vapes)
This is because these items need pre-sorting before onward transport. There's currently no safe treatment capacity available for this process.
What you can do with items currently not collected at recycling centres
Please note: never place electrical items or batteries in household waste or recycling bins, as this presents a serious fire risk.
Electrical items
- Store these items safely at home until the service is fully restored.
- Some retailers may accept these items for recycling. Please check the availability of this service with the store.
- Use your district kerbside collection if that service is available. Please check with your district council as some kerbside schemes are also affected. Go to Local Councils to find contact details.
Light bulbs and fluorescent tubes
You can take these to some larger supermarkets, DIY stores and electrical retailers.
Batteries
Accepted at some retail outlets and supermarkets.
Ongoing work to restore services
We're continuing to work with our contractor to restore full electrical waste services as soon as possible. We'll provide a further update once arrangements are in place to safely manage all types of waste electrical items.
The disruption may also continue to affect some district council electrical collections service. You can check service availability with your district council. Go to Local Councils to find contact details.
We thank you for your patience and cooperation while efforts continue to minimise disruption and safely restore recycling services.
