Learning and skills support if you're facing redundancy

You may encounter several training-related challenges when trying to reskill or upskill for new employment. These challenges can affect both your ability to access training and your success in completing it.

Key skills you may rely on or need to develop:

  • Transferable skills: communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and time management
  • Adaptability and resilience: adjusting to change and coping with uncertainty
  • Job search skills: writing CVs, completing applications, networking, and performing well in interviews
  • Digital skills: using online job platforms, professional networks (e.g. LinkedIn), and remote working tools
  • Self-reflection and career planning: identifying strengths, interests, and potential new career paths

Common learning challenges:

  • Confidence loss: redundancy can affect self-esteem, making it harder to be positive when presenting skills.
  • Skills gaps: your previous role may no longer match current labour market demands
  • Rapid change in industries: keeping up with new technologies or practices can feel overwhelming.
  • Motivation and structure: without a regular routine, maintaining focus on job searching or learning can be difficult.
  • Financial and emotional pressure: Stress about income or uncertainty can limit capacity to engage in learning.

The transition to a new job often involves both recognising existing strengths and addressing gaps through learning and support.
