A47 traffic mitigation measures

Weston Longville, Morton on the Hill and Taverham Road, Honingham

We are planning to install traffic mitigation measures on roads in the parishes of Weston Longville and Morton on the Hill, and on Taverham Road in Honingham, with the aim of reducing traffic impacts in these areas following the closure of the Easton roundabout. National Highways will remove the roundabout as part of their A47 North Tuddenham to Easton improvement project, which is currently under construction, and this will reduce the number of junctions with the local road network.

Between November 2025 and January 2026, we consulted on proposals for these traffic mitigation measures. We have considered the comments we received and taken account of these as we finalised our proposals. These final measures are detailed below, which highlights any key changes following the consultation:

Marl Hill, Morton on the Hill

  • A priority road narrowing will be introduced on Marl Hill near the A1067 junction, requiring vehicles travelling towards Weston Longville to give way to oncoming traffic.
  • Two additional road narrowings will be introduced further south on Marl Hill to create sections of single-file traffic. Localised drainage measures, including the installation or relocation of ditches in the verge, will be introduced at the road narrowing locations.
  • A further priority road narrowing will be installed south of these locations, requiring vehicles travelling towards Weston Longville to give way to oncoming traffic.

Weston Longville village area

  • SLOW road markings will be installed within the village on Church Street by All Saints Church.
  • A 20mph Vehicle Activated Sign (a flashing sign) will be installed within the village centre on Woodforde Close between Post Office Lane and Field Road.
  • Key changeThe proposed tightening of the existing chicane on Woodforde Close will be undertaken using an overrun area rather than extending the full height of the chicane to ensure that turning movements into and out of nearby residential properties are not impacted.  An overrun is an area where the height above the carriageway is smaller (approximately 15mm) and it is used to create the impression of an area than is not normal carriageway whilst still allowing vehicles to travel over it.
  • A new chicane will be introduced further south on Woodforde Close after Post Office Lane. Key change: The spacing of the chicane buildouts has been adjusted and will also use overrun areas to improve turning into and out of nearby residential properties.

South of Weston Longville (Honingham Road/Rectory Road)

  • The 20mph speed limit will be extended southwards on Honingham Road, beyond Rectory Road.
  • A priority road narrowing will be introduced on Honingham Road south of Rectory Road, requiring vehicles travelling towards Weston Longville village centre to give way to oncoming traffic.

Weston Green crossroads area

  • Priority road narrowings will be introduced on the approaches to the Weston Green crossroads, on Honingham Road and Paddy's Lane
  • Vehicle Activated Signs will be installed on the approaches to the priority road narrowings. Key change: It is proposed that these will flash a 'road narrows' warning sign and 'slow down' message rather than the 30mph roundel that was shown at the consultation.

Weston Green Road

Subject to the promotion of the necessary Traffic Regulation Order, a Prohibition of Motor Vehicles (except for access) restriction will be introduced on Weston Green Road between Breck Road and the locally known Weston Road. Key change: We intend to install monitoring cameras for a set period after this restriction is introduced to determine if it has been effective at reducing potential traffic impacts of the A47 improvements and whether further interventions might need to be considered.

Taverham Road (Honingham)

  • A 30mph Vehicle Activated Sign will be installed on Taverham Road so that it flashes southbound vehicles prior to entering the area of residential properties.
  •  A priority road narrowing will be introduced further south on Taverham Road by Church Farm, requiring vehicles travelling away from the A47 to give way to oncoming traffic.
  • Key change: Bollards will be introduced to protect an area of verge near Church Farm Cottage.

General

  • Key change: Where narrowings of the carriageway are proposed, our consultation showed the carriageway width as being 3.25 metres. This width has been reduced to 3.2 metres to discourage cars trying to overtake cyclists whilst passing through the measure.
  • Key change: In addition, there will be some minor changes to the road lining and signing compared to that shown in the consultation proposals.

Timescales

We are planning to install all the measures during the summer of 2026.
