Mainstream schools for children with SEND
Mainstream schools have a legal duty to support children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
Special educational needs (SEN) Support
Mainstream schools provide SEN Support for all children and young people with SEND. They assess pupils with SEND to identify their needs and what level of SEN Support will meet their needs. This gets written into a SEN Support plan.

Finding out how a mainstream school supports pupils with SEND
Reading SEN information reports (SIR)
Every school must publish a SEN Information Report (SIR). This explains:
- How they identify, assess, and support pupils with SEND
- The types of support available
- How they track progress
- How they involve families in decision making
School visits
Visiting a school lets you see the environment, meet the staff, and ask questions.
You can attend open days/evenings or contact the school to request a visit. Most schools will arrange this with you and introduce you to their special educational needs coordinator (SENCo).
If your child can't go to a mainstream school
Children with SEND may have complex needs that mainstream schools can't meet. These children may need to go to a school with specialist provision. To go to a school with specialist provision you must have an education, health and care (EHC) plan.
Not all children with EHC plans need specialist provision. Many children with EHC plans have their needs met by mainstream schools.
