Reuse Shops raise an incredible £32,000 for Norfolk Charity Nelson's Journey

Nelson's Journey, a local charity which supports children and young people in Norfolk who've experienced the death of a significant person, has been presented with a cheque for £32,000 raised through donations from Norfolk County Council's Reuse Shops. 

The cheque was presented to Nelson's Journey by Councillor Pat Gould, Cabinet Member for Countryside, Coast and Culture and the Vice-Chair of Norfolk County Councillor Mike Westman at the King's Lynn Recycling Centre.

Cllr Pat Gould said' "It's an honour to present this money to Nelson's Journey, a fantastic local charity. Reuse shops are really popular with Norfolk's residents, and they help to stop many items from being thrown away unnecessarily - while also raising money for fantastic causes. That's why it's great to also be able to announce today that the site here in King's Lynn will see their reuse shop double in size under our new plans, meaning a bigger, better Reuse Shop for the local community." 

Housed in 14 of Norfolk County Council's recycling centres, Reuse Shops welcome donations of second-hand items and sell these at bargain prices. Reuse shops play an important role in cutting waste and last year they stopped 1,394 tonnes of reusable items being thrown away.

Income generated via the Reuse Shops helps to offset the cost of providing the recycling centre service. Staff across Norfolk's Reuse Shops then nominate and vote for a local charity to benefit from a partnership which sees them receive a share of the proceeds from the shop's sales. 

Gary Stevens from Nelson's Journey said: "This money is absolutely life changing for the charity. This will enable us to continue our work with the children and young people of Norfolk, it's an amazing sum of money and we can't thank you all enough." 

To date Reuse Shops have raised over £155,000 for local charities including Big C Cancer Charity, East Anglian Air Ambulance and Norfolk Wildlife Trust.
