What is child exploitation
Child exploitation means someone is taking advantage of a child.
Children can be at risk of harm outside their home. This could be:
- Online
- In their local area
It often happens when adults aren't around to help.
Types of child exploitation
There are two main types of child exploitation:
- Child criminal exploitation (CCE) - when children are used to commit crimes
- Child sexual exploitation (CSE) - when children are tricked or forced into sexual activity
Reasons child exploitation can occur
Child exploitation can occur:
- In exchange for something the victim needs or wants such as money, clothes, mobile phones
- For the financial gain or other advantage of the perpetrator or facilitator
- Through violence or the threat of violence
