What is child exploitation

Child exploitation means someone is taking advantage of a child.

Children can be at risk of harm outside their home. This could be:  

  • Online  
  • In their local area  

It often happens when adults aren't around to help.  

Types of child exploitation

There are two main types of child exploitation:  

  1. Child criminal exploitation (CCE) - when children are used to commit crimes  
  2. Child sexual exploitation (CSE) - when children are tricked or forced into sexual activity 

Reasons child exploitation can occur

Child exploitation can occur:

  • In exchange for something the victim needs or wants such as money, clothes, mobile phones 
  • For the financial gain or other advantage of the perpetrator or facilitator 
  • Through violence or the threat of violence
