MECC and behaviour change training

Participants need only to do one of the following courses, not both.

Behaviour Change Level 1 (BC1) - Making the Most of MECC 

This is a half-day in-person or online training course. 

Who it is for

Anyone working face-to-face with Norfolk residents aged 16 or above, who has brief opportunistic conversations with individuals. These could be either planned or unplanned. You could work in the public sector, health and social care system, voluntary and community services, or be a volunteer.

How the training will help you

The training will provide you with the knowledge, confidence and skills to: 

  • Recognise and make the most of an opportunity to talk to people about their health and wellbeing 
  • Build a rapport with individuals 
  • Help them to set a person-centred goal towards health behaviour change 

The training will also help you to signpost people to the Ready to Change website and other local support resources. 

By the end of the training participants will: 

  • Know what MECC is and why it is important 
  • Understand what health and wellbeing is in the context of Norfolk
  • Understand basic behaviour change theory
  • Be able to recognise opportunities to start a MECC conversation 
  • Be able to signpost to the Ready to Change website 

Prior knowledge 

Before registering for the course we recommend you complete the online eLearning for Health (elfh) sessions:

Behaviour Change Level 2 (BC2) - Using Behaviour Change in Practice

This is a whole-day in-person or online training course. 

Who it is for

Anyone working face-to-face with Norfolk residents aged 16 or above, who has the opportunity to engage longer with individuals, at a more enhanced level, about their health and wellbeing.

Giving health and wellbeing advice and recommendations will be part of your job role. 

How the training will help you

You will explore a range of evidence-based behaviour change approaches and how to apply them to your practice. This will include engaging with individuals for brief interventions. You will explore their strengths and help them find their own solutions for change. 

The training will provide you with the knowledge, confidence and skills to: 

  • Recognise and make the most of opportunities to talk about health and wellbeing with individuals 
  • Build a rapport with them 
  • Help them to set a person-centred goal towards health behaviour change 

By the end of the training you will: 

  • Have examined your own knowledge, beliefs and understanding of behaviour change and what works well in current practice
  • Know the value of collaborative working with your clients and how to do it well
  • Know how to enable people to recognise and exercise their own autonomy. Help them to think about their own reasons for change and help them set a goal
  • Know how to manage difficult conversations and support patients through ambivalence and discord 
  • Have gained skills and tools to support and maintain behaviour change

Behaviour Change Community of Practice 

When you complete the BC1 or BC2 course, you will join our Community of Practice. You will be able to access our behaviour change master classes, run by our expert provider Healthy Dialogues. 

These are short duration webinars so you can further develop your confidence and understanding in delivering behaviour change interventions.
