Enhanced Special educational needs (SEN) Support
Enhanced SEN Support is a type of Special education needs (SEN) Support offered by some mainstream schools.
This is for children and young people with more complex needs that other types of SEN Support can't meet.
Types of Enhanced SEN Support
Small group provision
Some mainstream schools offer bespoke support to small groups. This support may include:
- Nurture groups
- Specialist teaching for pupils with cognition and learning needs
- Tailored support for those with more complex needs
We call this type of support, Enhanced SEN Support or enhanced provision. Your child or young person's school might have its own name for it.
If a school offers this type of support, they will include it in their SEN information report.
Specialist Resource Bases (SRBs) and Specialist Hubs of Inclusive Practice (SHIPS)
Some mainstream schools have a Specialist Resource Base (SRB) or a Specialist Hub of Inclusive Practice (SHIP) within them.
SRBs and SHIPs provide Enhanced SEN Support:
- They are for children and young people who need a higher level of support than available in a classroom
- They offer a structured and personalised environment within a mainstream school
- They have their own staffing, resources, and expertise to support children and young people
We manage all admissions to SRBs and SHIPs in Norfolk through a referral process. Find out more about admissions process for SRBs and SHIPs.
If your child or young person gets Enhanced SEN Support
If your child or young person gets Enhanced SEN Support, their school will write it into a SEN Support plan.
