Flourish pledge case studies

Tarmac

What they pledged

Tarmac made a pledge to give post 16 children in care:

  • An introduction to Tarmac and CRH
  • Work experience opportunities

About the pledge

The young people who took part were put forward by Norfolk County Council's virtual school and life beyond care teams.

Tarmac delivered industry introductory sessions to the young people and provided on site experiences. This opened their eyes to the huge variety of projects and types of work undertaken in this organisation. The young people learnt about several different types of career path within the construction industry. They were also directed to the extensive apprenticeship programme offered by Tarmac and CRH. The young people were inspired by the presentations, show and tell sessions and work experience they received.

The pledge has been of benefit to Tarmac as a business too. For many years, the construction industry has suffered from a skills shortage which is exacerbated by Norfolk's georgraphy.

"Through making and delivering our pledge we have seen the growth of a mutually beneficial relationship with the Flourish movement. Our pledge has enabled children and young people to learn about the construction industry and gain career insight and opportunities in this field."

Through Tarmac's commitment to this pledge, they delivered on their promises for the young people. They have already recruited one young person through the pledge process and are hopeful for more in the future.

Tarmac engaged further with the Flourish movement in 2024 by being a category sponsor at the Flourish awards. They networked with other organisations who share the same vision and commitment to providing opportunities for children and young people in Norfolk.
