Flourish pledge case studies

Woodlands Primary Academy

What they pledged

Woodlands Primary Academy in Bradwell pledged to focus on its pupils with SEND, and on pupils who were young carers.

About the pledge

"We will initiate a new monthly meeting with young carers to provide them with holistic support and provide a home pack for school holidays. To recognise and praise progress we will award 'Lexia' certificates as milestones are reached. For our pupils with SEND we will award 'Learning Passport Performer' certificates to make them feel proud of, and praise, their achievements."

As a result of their pledge, Woodlands Primary Academy now has 23 recognised young carers on its school register. Each of them receives support from the school. For example, mini-medics sessions which help children learn how to take care of their mental and physical health, and look out for others. Young carers in the school are also put in touch with Great Yarmouth and Gorleston Young Carers (GYGYC) for more tailored, specialist support.

Further impact from the pledge is that parents are now recognising their own children as young carers and are making sure they get the right support for this.

"Flourish has helped us ....in identifying and supporting our young carers..... We are gradually building our staff, children and parents' knowledge of what a young carer is. As a result, we are increasing awareness of young carers, getting support for them and helping to remove the stigma around this."
