Flourish pledge case studies

Great Yarmouth Borough Council

What they pledged

Great Yarmouth Borough Council (GYBC) pledged to provide opportunities for young people with a learning disability or autism to develop work-based skills.

About the pledge

GYBC prioritised supporting the transition from secondary education into further/higher education and work.

Alongside East Coast College and DFM Project SEARCH, GYBC pledged to provide work placements to support the move from education into a workplace setting. They also committed to provide year 10 students with work experience opportunities in the council. This was to help raise awareness of occupations and opportunities.

GYBC now runs a 12 month "education to work" transition programme. Their first rotation of four young people began in October 2023. They worked in estate caretaking, planning, garden tearooms and print room services. The second rotation of three young people started in January 2024. Placements were in executive services, the tenancy team, the print room, portering and the garden tearooms.

"The Flourish pledge has been an opportunity for us to put children and young people at the core of our "early careers" ambition, raising aspiration and inspiring young people in the borough."
